This photo shows the actual courthouse where Kitty’s case was tried. It was built in the 1830s and is located on Gay Street in the village of Washington, Virginia. The single-courtroom is still in use for Rappahannock County in Virginia.

The jailhouse was also built in the 1830s. Kitty and her children lived in the jail for a number of months until her case was resolved. The building is on Porter Street in Washington, Virginia and currently houses offices for the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department.

This is the plaque describing Kitty’s story is on the lawn outside of the Rappahannock County Courthouse where her case was tried in 1846. The old County Jail, where Kitty and her children lived until the case was resolved, is in the background.
